Science is under increasing pressure: populist narratives, right-wing extremist attacks, disinformation and hate campaigns threaten researchers as well as the scientific system itself – nationally and internationally.

In this talk, Matthias Fejes will highlight current developments, analyze the underlying dynamics, and present strategies for how scientific institutions and democratic societies can respond to these challenges – with the aim of strengthening the resilience of science and society and thus contributing to the protection of democracy.

Following the input by the speaker, there will be space for discussion, questions, and exchange among participants. The session will be held in English and take place online.

The event is part of the mentoring program and also open to mentees from mentoring initiatives at other German universities – fostering cross-institutional networking and exchange among early-career researchers.

Matthias Fejes

Matthias Fejes is spokesman for TUD. Previously, he was deputy press spokesman for Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC), where his work included involvement in the “#wirsindchemnitz” campaign, which was awarded the “Prize for University Communication” by the HRK and ZEIT-Verlag. Other professional positions took him to Philipps University in Marburg and the FernUniversität in Hagen. Fejes is a member of the board of the Federal Association for University Communication and one of the co-founders of Scicomm-Support – the national contact point for attacks and inappropriate conflicts in science communication. In addition, he is involved in various committees and working groups, such as the “Impact Unit” of Wissenschaft im Dialog, as a jury member of the “Fast Forward Science” competition, and in the #FactoryWisskomm of the BMFTR, and is actively involved in the further development of science communication.
